Morocco’s Red Meat Industry Thrives: 17.3 kg Per Capita Consumption, $2.6 Billion Revenue

In 2018, the national production of red meats was estimated at 603,000 tons, thus covering 98% of the needs of Moroccans. And the turnover generated is quite considerable.
In total, the red meat sector generated a turnover of 26 billion dirhams for a national production of 603,000 tons, said Aziz Akhannouch, Minister of Agriculture and Maritime Fisheries, during the inauguration of the 2nd edition of the Livestock Trade Fair, in Sidi Bennour, on October 3.
With this production, Moroccans consumed an average of 17.3 kg of red meat per capita.
According to Aziz Akhannouch, this production is very close to the target set by the 2nd program contract (2014-2020) of his department, which is to reach 612,000 tons.
As for the national herd, there are 3.5 million head of cattle, 20.6 million head of sheep, 6.5 million head of goats and 180,000 head of camels.
The red meat sector is also a source of job creation with some 80,000 additional jobs.
