Morocco Ranks 76th Globally in English Proficiency, Study Finds

Morocco stagnates in 76th place in the global ranking of English proficiency established by the Swiss organization "Education First". Despite a slight improvement in its score, from 478 to 479, the country’s level remains "weak".
At the national level, it is Casablanca-Settat that takes the lead in the regional rankings, dethroning Rabat-Salé-Kénitra, relegated to second place. Marrakech-Safi completes the podium. At the bottom of the pack, Guelmim-Oued Noun and Drâa-Tafilalet bring up the rear.
Rabat remains the city where English is best spoken, closely followed by El Jadida. Casablanca climbs in the rankings and surpasses Oujda, now seventh. Béni Mellal and Khouribga occupy the last places.
At the African level, South Africa dominates the rankings, rising to 11th place worldwide. Morocco comes in ninth, behind Tunisia and Tanzania. Côte d’Ivoire, Somalia and Libya show the weakest levels of proficiency.
"Education First" indicates that the understanding of English has generally improved over the past thirty years, even if fluency remains a challenge for many. The report highlights the progress of women, particularly in Africa, and points to the weaker level in the public sector compared to the private sector.
Finally, the report calls for better teacher training and the systematic integration of English into university curricula.
