Morocco Ranks 44th in Global Hunger Index, Maintains Low Famine Level

44th out of a total of 127 countries. This is Morocco’s 2020 ranking in the "Global Hunger Index", a multidimensional statistical tool used to measure the state of hunger at the global, regional and national levels.
While countries like the Central African Republic, Chad, Zambia, Sierra Leone and Madagascar have the highest hunger indices, the kingdom continues to be in the category of countries with a "low level of famine", despite a slight 0.5% decline compared to last year in the fight against hunger.
Developed by the International Food Policy Research Policy (IFPRI), the Global Hunger Index (0 = no famine and 100 = widespread famine) studies, based on 4 indicators, the progress made by the different countries in the fight against this scourge:
• Proportion of the population with insufficient caloric intake
• Proportion of children under 5 years old suffering from underweight (too low BMI)
• Proportion of children under 5 years old with stunted growth (small stature for age)
• Under-5 mortality rate (inadequate nutrition and unhealthy environment)
For IFPRI, the classifications of certain countries are provisional, due to the lack of availability of the necessary data for the evaluation. Efforts should still be made in terms of data collection, in order to have a clearer picture and to apply actions adapted to the actual conditions.
