Morocco Ranks 28th Globally in Basic Fruit Production, FAO Data Shows

Morocco is ranked 28th in the world among the main producing countries of basic fruits. This statistic comes from data from the United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO). But beyond that, the Kingdom is pursuing reforms in the sector.
In 2019, China was the world’s leading producer of these agricultural products with over 249,614,183 tons. This is followed by India, Brazil, the United States, Turkey, Mexico, Indonesia, Spain, Iran, Italy, the Philippines, Egypt, Colombia, Nigeria, Thailand, Vietnam, France, Ecuador, Argentina and Pakistan for the top 20 producers of primary fruits.
The FAO considers primary fruits to be bananas, oranges, tangerines, lemons, mangoes, avocados, pineapples, dates, cherries, apples, pears and many others. The fruit and vegetable sector of the Moroccan market covers nearly 260,000 hectares and produces about seven million tons annually.
The Moroccan government adopted a strategy in 2008 to stimulate and strengthen the agricultural sector. The kingdom also relies on promoting the integration of agriculture into international markets and intends to help agriculture achieve sustainable growth. The kingdom also prioritizes strengthening the position of small farmers by adequately promoting the growth of crop yields and encouraging a shift towards crops better suited to environmental conditions and market demand.
