Morocco Raises Sugar Prices as Government Phases Out Subsidies
The price of sugar has increased in Morocco since the beginning of this year. The cause is an increase in VAT on this product, set by the 2024 Finance Act, and which will be progressive over the next two years.
The VAT rate on sugar has increased from 7 to 8% since January 1, 2024 and will reach 9% in 2025 and 10% in 2026, reports Al Akhbar, indicating that this increase in VAT has impacted the retail price of this product.
This year, the Moroccan government has decided not to subsidize products such as sugar, butane gas and flour, which justifies this increase in sugar prices on the domestic market. In previous years, the sugar subsidy had cost the government between 3.2 and 5 billion dirhams.
According to the latest statistics, a Moroccan consumes an average of 33 kilos of sugar per year, a quantity well above the world average of 22 kilos per person per year. Moroccans consume one million tons of sugar per year. You said mint tea?
