Morocco to Raise Wheat Import Tariffs, Boosting Local Farmers

Morocco wants to raise customs duties on soft wheat and durum wheat. This decision, announced for the near future, aims to protect local production stifled by imports.
Reporting the Minister of Agriculture, Aziz Akhannouch, Nasdaq.com informs that the Kingdom wants to take this measure to help national farmers benefit from a good yield as expected this year by reducing the high imports of 2 to 3 million tons of soft wheat.
According to the explanation provided by Minister Akhannouch and relayed by the news site, the new import duty that will be announced in a few days aims to reduce imports and help farmers market the national harvest considered very promising in 2021, after two consecutive years of drought. The return of the rains will have favored this year the sowing of 4.2 million hectares of cereals, of which 44% in soft wheat, 34% in durum wheat and 22% in barley, details the same source.
Speaking of imports, the figures have risen exponentially in 2019, reaching 46.3% or $1.5 billion, while the 2020 national harvest was 39%
