Morocco's Prime Minister Reaffirms Commitment to Free Public Education

The persistent rumors that Moroccan schools would cease to be free are false, the Head of Government Saâdeddine El Othmani has once again denied.

In opening the government council meeting held yesterday, El Othmani stated: "There is no intention, reflection or debate on abandoning the free education," adding that the State continues to increase the budget allocated to this sector and the socio-educational programs linked to it, such as school catering and transportation.

To try to reassure the population, the Head of Government listed the efforts made by the State, in particular the "Tayssir" program, which has seen its budget increase by 1.5 billion this year, the allocation of scholarships to trainees of vocational training institutions for 2 billion dirhams or the increase in the number of university scholarship recipients.

Furthermore, he recalled the establishment of compulsory schooling for children aged 4 to 16, stressing that the State and the government "attach all the necessary importance to the education sector and work to support it by all means through concrete and operational measures so that it can play its role".

Saâdeddine El Othmani called on all those responsible for these rumors to "stop" spreading them, as they "undermine the country and public service and create confusion among citizens".
