Morocco’s Poultry Industry Faces Crisis as Egg and Chicken Demand Plummets

The poultry sector is in distress due to the crisis caused by the coronavirus. The National Association of Egg Producers (ANPO) announces daily losses of several million dirhams (MDH) and sounds the alarm.
Daily losses of 3.5 MDH, or "350 MDH recorded during the period from March 20 to June 30," says ANPO in a press release. Indeed, the activity is experiencing both an abundance of supply and a drastic drop in demand. The consequence is a fall in prices, which could have adverse repercussions on all its components, as well as on the national economy.
ANPO speaks of an unprecedented asphyxiating crisis dating back to early 2019. It is caused by overproduction and falling prices. Two factors that do not allow covering the costs. Added to this is the pandemic crisis that has accelerated the pressure. Not to mention that, despite the context of the health crisis, production has continued thanks to strong mobilization and consolidation of the efforts of the various actors in the sector. Thus, producers have continued to supply the market in a normal and regular manner.
Professionals deplore during the pandemic context of coronavirus, the suspension of several activities and the closure of restaurants, hotels in the wake of the declaration of the state of health emergency.
