Morocco positions itself as a future hub of clean energy to Europe

On the sidelines of the state visit of President Emmanuel Macron to Rabat, the Cherifian Office of Phosphates (OCP) has concluded a partnership with the French industrial energy group Engie for projects in green hydrogen and renewable energy. What to remember from this agreement?
OCP and Engie have agreed on a 17 billion euro investment plan to strengthen the kingdom’s energy self-sufficiency and support the green transition. Four major projects will be implemented as part of this agreement. These are the establishment of a renewable energy production unit with flexible storage, the construction of an infrastructure for the transmission of electricity to OCP sites, a desalination plant for agricultural regions, as well as the production of green ammonia, essential for the activities of the Moroccan giant of fertilizers.
It is also planned to carry out feasibility studies to explore the possibilities of producing green hydrogen, synthetic fuels for aviation and sustainable methanol, thus consolidating Morocco’s position as a future hub for exporting clean energy to Europe. According to the implementation schedule, renewable energy production should start as early as 2026. As for the desalination and green hydrogen projects, they will have to be implemented from 2028 and 2032 respectively.
This initiative is part of OCP’s $13 billion strategic plan (2023-2027) which aims to make its industrial operations carbon neutral by 2040 thanks to renewable energy and desalinated water. The agreement between OCP and Engie thus not only strengthens bilateral relations, but it propels Morocco into a new era of green industrialization, a model for the African continent, it is specified.
