Morocco's Port Traffic Surges 8% Despite Pandemic, Led by Jorf Lasfar

Port traffic continues to grow, with an 8% increase by the end of September and a 6.9% growth in the first nine months of 2020, according to the latest statistics from the National Ports Agency.

This growth in port activity stands at 70.5 million tons (MT) compared to 65.96 MT and 64.22 MT at the end of September 2018. Three ports stood out in the development of this traffic. These are Mohammedia, Casablanca and Jorf Lasfar, which handled the transit of 55 million tons, or nearly 78.2% of the traffic by the end of September.

In detail, the first place was occupied by the port of Jorf Lasfar with a share of 40.9% of the global traffic, 28.8 million tons and a progression of +7.4% compared to the same period in 2019. This feat was achieved by this port thanks to the growth of fertilizer exports (+31.1%), cereal imports (+57.1%), sulfur (+21.2%), sulfuric acid (+21.1%) and ammonia (+21.1%).

In 2nd place is the port of Casablanca. It achieved a 32.4% share of global traffic, 22.8 MT and a 2.2% growth compared to the first nine months of last year. This progress is justified by the improvement of cereal imports (+34.8%), animal feed (+11.2%) and phosphate exports (+5.7%). The port of Mohammedia is in 3rd position with a total traffic volume of 3.4 MT at the end of September and a 13.1% decline in port activity compared to the first nine months of 2019.
