Morocco’s Pomegranate Exports Soar: Production Jumps 45% Since 2017

Moroccan pomegranate production has seen a sharp increase during the last season, which ended just a few days ago. The volume of exports reaching 910 tons in 2021 compared to 362 tons in 2017.
According to l’Économiste, the cultivation of the pomegranate tree is booming in Morocco in recent years thanks to the enthusiasm it is generating. The harvests for the last season reached 22,750 tons, i.e. more than 45% compared to the 2017 season.
This performance is attributable to the support of the Ministry of Agriculture, the newspaper specifies, stating that the sector has benefited from subsidies of more than 3 million dirhams, allocated to the realization of new plantations and the conversion of the gravity irrigation system to localized irrigation.
As a result, the cultivated area has increased from 1,200 hectares in 2017 to 2,370 hectares currently. Similarly, 74% of this area is located in the area of influence of the Regional Office for the Development of the Moulouya, of which 61% in the province of Berkane. Also, the curve is upward for exports to EU countries.
As for exports, the newspaper notes that it is urgent to put in place a new marketing strategy on the national and international markets.
