Morocco Poised for Major Battery Industry Boost as Lithium-Ion Pioneer Plans Factories

Moroccan scientist Rachid Yazami, inventor of the graphite anode for lithium-ion batteries, plans to create two factories dedicated to the production of rechargeable lithium-ion batteries in Morocco.
The first will be dedicated to the manufacture of "Gigafactory" batteries, while the second will be dedicated to the production of fast chargers for electric vehicles, he announced in an interview with Al Jazeera, stressing that negotiations for these projects are continuing with his partners.
The physical chemist revealed that he was "working with Asian companies" on the development of a fast charger for rechargeable lithium-ion batteries. The first model of this charger will be available by next year at the latest, he specified.
Discussing the Battery Excellence Center at the Private University of Fez and its vocation, Yazami explained that the goal is to "train Moroccan engineers and researchers capable of knowing the ins and outs of batteries". This center is the only one of its kind in Africa.
