Morocco Plans Major Healthcare Expansion with 20 New Hospitals by 2025

About twenty new hospitals should be built in Morocco by next year, said the Minister of Health, who welcomed the increase in funds allocated to his department.

In his presentation, Khalid Ait Taleb said that the budget allocated to the ministry is divided according to human resources, strengthening the capacities of the health system, planning, programming and coordination, reproductive health, maternal and child health, or people with specific needs. The budget also takes into account epidemiological monitoring, health security, disease prevention and control, primary health care, as well as the maintenance of health infrastructure and equipment, reports the MAP.

The minister stressed that public hospitals and university hospitals have provided more than seven million services, as part of the measures taken in the fight against the Covid-19 pandemic. Regarding the reform of the health system, he listed the strengthening of public investment and public-private partnership, the promotion of the national pharmaceutical industry, institutional reform and proactive management of health programs, which are part of the 2021 action program. The program also includes increasing the clinical capacity by nearly 2,260 beds, the reconstruction of the Ibn Sina hospital in Rabat, the construction of eight provincial hospital centers, a regional hospital and 11 local hospitals.

Regarding the achievements of the ministry during the 2019-2020 period, Khalid Ait Taleb stressed that the national supply has been largely strengthened to allow hospitals to cope with the care of thousands of people infected with the Coronavirus. There has also been an increase in the number of laboratories to carry out Covid-19 screening tests as well as Morocco’s participation in clinical trials to develop a vaccine against the virus. As for the credits allocated to the fight against the pandemic, the execution rate is currently 74%, the same source specifies.
