Morocco Plans English-Language News Broadcasts to Boost Tourism

Morocco is showing growing interest in English. It intends to broadcast information in this language, which is the most spoken in the world, with a total of over 1.4 billion speakers, in order to attract more English-speaking tourists.
During a parliamentary session on Thursday, Mohamed Mehdi Bensaid, Minister of Culture, Youth and Communication, announced that Morocco is considering broadcasting news in English on the country’s public channels. He also said that the public channel Al-Aoula is currently working on a new project aimed at paving the way for the broadcast of news in the English language. This will involve covering international events inside and outside Morocco, as well as conducting interviews with English speakers.
The Spanish language - spoken by more than 500 million people in the world - will not be forgotten either. Moroccan public channels will also focus on this language. According to the minister, this is the "language policy" that these channels intend to adopt. Launched nearly 34 years ago, the broadcast of news in Spanish has, he recalled, contributed to increasing the popularity of Morocco among Spanish speakers and attracting Iberian tourists. As for broadcasting in the English language, the kingdom expects the same results.
