Morocco Plans Dakhla Stadium for 2030 World Cup Bid

The Moroccan authorities have launched the project to build a football stadium in Dakhla with a view to hosting the 2025 CAF or the 2030 World Cup.

Architect Abdou Lahlou, who designed the Marrakech airport plan, among other projects, is working on this project where sustainability is the priority. A triumvirate of the Canarian Association of Friends of Morocco commercial interest group carried out an institutional visit this month to establish cooperation modalities with the Canarian companies that will participate in the realization of this work on a 50-hectare domain.

The Dakhla city council approved a budget of 20 million euros for this project in 2021. If Morocco joined the candidacy of Spain and Portugal for the 2030 World Cup, and if it is selected by FIFA, the stadium under construction in Dakhla would come as a complement to the one in Gran Canaria, located 45 minutes by plane from Las Palmas, reports Mundo Deportivo.

UD Las Palmas has launched a renovation plan for the Gran Canaria stadium this month to bring it up to standard in case Spain is selected to host the 2030 World Cup. "The only difficulty I see is that we are on an island, and we have a limited capacity of planes and hotels," said Miguel Ángel Ramírez, the president of UD Las Palmas, on Monday.

For its part, Morocco plans to build, in addition to the large stadium in Dakhla, four other stadiums including one in Guerguerat. The Confederation of African Football (CAF) chaired by Patrice Motsepe should announce the name of the host country for the 2025 CAN by June 2023. The executive committee of the body must choose between Algeria, Morocco, Zambia and the joint Nigeria-Benin candidacy.
