Morocco Plans $5 Billion High-Speed Rail Link Between Marrakech and Agadir

The government is planning the construction of the rail link connecting Marrakech and Agadir. The preliminary studies commissioned for this purpose have been carried out.
The executive has made this project a priority in the plan of the National Railway Office (ONCF), said the Minister of Transport and Logistics, Mohamed Abdeljalil, to parliament, adding that the project requires an investment of nearly 50 billion dirhams, reports the MAP.
To this end, the government is doing everything possible with the office to secure the financing, including public-private partnership, he stressed.
This railway line will be over 230 km long and is part of "the prospect of a later extension to the rest of the southern provinces," King Mohammed VI had declared.
Once in service, it will not only contribute to the opening up of the entire region, but above all to its development and economic boom, by boosting the transport of people and goods, and by supporting economic sectors in general, export activities and tourism in particular.
Ultimately, the ONCF plans to build 1,300 km of new high-speed lines and 3,800 km of conventional lines, which will connect 43 cities, Abdeljalil concluded.
