Morocco overtakes India to become Italy’s second-largest remittance destination
Morocco has climbed to second place among the countries receiving the most money from Italy, behind Bangladesh. The latest data from the Bank of Italy show transfers to the kingdom rising even as remittances abroad decline overall.

Morocco has just overtaken India in the ranking of money transfers made from Italy. A few months after taking third place, the kingdom has now risen to second, according to statistics published on October 9 by the Bank of Italy.
In the 12 months ending in June 2026, Morocco received 7% of the money sent from Italy through the transfer channels tracked by the central bank. India followed, with 6.8%. Bangladesh retained a commanding lead, accounting for 19.4% of these flows.
The reversal is notable. In the ranking for all of 2025, India still held second place, with 6.9% of transfers, ahead of Morocco at 6.7%. The latest figures from the Bank of Italy have now reversed that order.
Nearly €300 million sent to Morocco in six months
The amounts confirm this growth. Between January and June 2026, transfers to Morocco reached 292.5 million euros, up 4% from the first half of 2025.
This trend comes amid a less favorable backdrop for international transfers from Italy. In the second quarter of 2026, money sent abroad fell 3.1% year on year. Flows to North Africa and the Middle East, meanwhile, rose 2.7%.
Morocco had already received nearly 580 million euros in 2025. In an analysis published on October 22, Agenzia Nova highlights the importance of these transfers to economic ties between the two countries, from supporting families to financing housing and education.
The Moroccan community is a major force in these exchanges. Italy had 412 457 residents of Moroccan nationality as of January 1, 2025. The latest statistics now place the kingdom ahead of India among the main destinations for money transferred from the peninsula.
