Morocco Outpaces Spain in Tourism Exchange, Over 900,000 Visit Iberian Neighbor

The balance of tourists seems to have been reversed in 2018 between Morocco and Spain. More than 900,000 Moroccan travelers chose the Iberian neighbor for their holidays, while only 800,000 Spaniards set foot on Moroccan soil.
While Spanish tourists were always more numerous to visit Morocco, in 2018 the number of Moroccan tourists in Spain exceeded for the first time the Spanish arrivals. A 10% gap was observed by the EFE news agency.
According to Challenge, the geographical proximity plays an important role in the choice of Moroccans. 13 km away, the latter prefer the road route, which allows them to enjoy the Iberian landscape before settling in one of the cities of the Costa del Sol.
For its part, Spain is trying to strengthen its consular services in order to facilitate Moroccans’ access to the Spanish visa and reduce waiting times. More than 250,000 visa applications should be met in 2019 by the country’s consular services.
