Moroccan Community Tops Foreign Residents in Spain, Surpassing 700,000

As of January 1, 2019, the number of Moroccans residing in Spain reached 714,239, according to the National Institute of Statistics. They thus top the list of foreign communities in the Iberian country. In comparable data, the year 2018 recorded the arrival of more than 32,000 Moroccans in Spain.
Several different communities coexist on the Iberian peninsula. In pole position comes the Moroccan community, followed by Romanians, with 233,671 residents, Britons, 287,292, and Chinese, 244,148. The number of foreign residents in Spain increased by 6.3% in 2018, with a total of 4,848,516 immigrants.
Regarding the geographical distribution, three regions share the highest concentration of immigrants. The capital, Madrid, is in first place with 68,825 residents, followed by Catalonia, which has 40,301, then the Canary Islands, with 18,658 immigrants.
Regarding the total population of Spain, it reached 46,934,632 people, recording an increase of 0.59% compared to the same period last year. This increase is the result of the growing number of foreign nationals legally settled on the Iberian peninsula.
