Morocco’s Opposition Leader Slams Proposal to Decriminalize Adultery, Warns of ’Societal Drift’

The Secretary-General of the Party of Justice and Development (PJD), Abdelilah Benkirane, strongly criticized, on Thursday, during the 18th national youth forum of his party, the recent statements by the Minister of Justice calling for decriminalization of adultery.
For Benkirane, this proposal paves the way for a broader societal "drift", threatening Morocco’s traditional values. "The one who has introduced consensual relationships and homosexuality and similar scourges in Morocco, tomorrow, will come and tell you that your sons must become daughters and your daughters must become sons," he warned, denouncing an "attack" on the foundations of Moroccan society.
The former head of government also warned against the pressures exerted on the PJD to remain silent in the face of these developments. "When we see something that is not right, we cannot remain silent," he hammered, recalling the historical role of his party in stabilizing the country after the events of 2011. "It doesn’t matter to me whether we are leading the government, but what is important is that we have contributed to saving the country. Don’t forget what happened in 2011, when the country was threatened by the unknown, and if the Party of Justice and Development had not intervened, we might not know what would have become of this country," he added: "Look at what happened in other countries and what is happening there now," he said.
Benkirane also reaffirmed the PJD’s attachment to Islam as the main reference, while emphasizing its loyalty to the Alaouite monarchy. "Our work is based on the duty to give advice and to order good and forbid evil, whatever the cost," he concluded.
