Morocco’s Omicron Wave Peaks as COVID-19 Cases Slow, Health Officials Report

After a worrying end of 2021, the epidemiological situation in Morocco has improved in early January. Contaminations remain at high levels, but the pace has slowed in recent days. The peak of the Omicron wave seems to have already been reached.
On his LinkedIn account, the coordinator of the National Public Health Emergency Operations Center of the Ministry of Health, Mouad Merabet, explains that new cases have only increased by 7% in the past week, from January 17 to 23, 2022, citing official figures.
In detail, the national positivity rate has stagnated for the second consecutive week at 24.4%, with a decrease observed in the regions of Casablanca-Settat, Marrakech-Safi and Souss-Massa.
As for the R0, which corresponds to the estimated virus reproduction rate, i.e. the average number of people a sick person infects, it is now 0.98. This indicator had been above 1 since November 21, 2021, or 62 days.
Regarding the assessment of the level of criticality of SARS-CoV-2 transmission, it is high throughout the national territory. Indeed, all regions are at the red level. In the Casablanca-Settat region, it has gone from a very high level to a high level over the past week. The downward phase of the wave seems to have already begun.
