Morocco Offers Maritime Travel Subsidy for Expats Returning Home This Summer

We know a little more about the conditions and procedures for the payment of the maritime transport allowance intended for Moroccans Residing Abroad (MREs), who come on vacation as part of the Marhaba Operation. The Ministry of Equipment and Transport and the Ministry of Finance have jointly published in the latest official bulletin, a decree on the allowances.

There are many of these MREs who, since June 15, are returning to Morocco by sea. In its desire to make the stay more pleasant and above all less expensive, the government has decided to offer an exceptional allowance. Moroccans residing abroad, who return to Morocco by sea, during the period from June 15 to September 30, can benefit from this exceptional allowance.

Thus, the MREs who wish to do so must present a Moroccan passport or a national identity card (or an official document proving Moroccan nationality as the case may be), an official document confirming their residence abroad, a round-trip ticket and an official document proving the guardianship of the minor beneficiary. All this information must be provided via the electronic portal that has been created for this purpose by the Merchant Navy Directorate, under the Ministry of Equipment and Transport.

For the record, this allowance is intended on an exceptional basis for MREs, who as part of the Marhaba Operation 2021 will make a single round trip by sea. By way of clarification, the joint decree specifies that this compensation will be paid to eligible MREs through a bank transfer to an account hosted in a Moroccan bank. However, the Merchant Navy Directorate reserves the right to set new alternative payment methods.

The maritime transport allowance has been set at 1,000 dirhams for tickets purchased at less than 250 euros. However, if the ticket price is more than 250 euros, an additional 5 dirhams for each additional euro will be added. Also, the reference prices for round-trip tickets, with a car, have been reduced to 995 euros for a family of 4 for long-haul routes and to 450 euros for medium-haul routes, the decree specifies.
