Morocco’s Nightlife Revolution: Cafe Owners Push for Extended Hours in Tourist Hotspots

In Morocco, the profession of cafes and restaurants is mobilizing to have the closing rules revised. An initiative launched in Kenitra could well change the situation for the nightlife of tourist cities.
Noureddine El Harrak has decided to take action. The leader of the National Federation of Cafe and Restaurant Owners of Morocco is sending multiple official letters to the local authorities of Kenitra. Provincial authorities, municipal council and provincial security: they have all received the same request from the professional leader.
The stated objective remains clear. El Harrak is demanding the organization of a joint meeting to examine the issue of night-time schedules applied to cafes. This coordinated approach demonstrates the sector’s willingness to move the lines through the institutional channel.
The grievances expressed by the federal president concern the concrete difficulties encountered by the operators. The application of the municipal regulations setting the night-time closing hours of businesses generates, according to him, dysfunctions that deserve to be corrected.
His position is intended to be balanced. El Harrak calls for "finding a solution that respects the tranquility and comfort of the inhabitants, that takes into account the interests of professionals, and that takes into consideration the fact that the city of Kenitra is an industrial and seaside tourist city, which requires the provision of necessary needs and infrastructure".
