Morocco-Nigeria Gas Pipeline Project Advances, Aims to Supply Europe

Amina Benkhadra, Director General of the National Office of Hydrocarbons and Mines of Morocco (ONHYM), recently spoke about the progress of the Morocco - Nigeria gas pipeline project, stating that the studies are advancing in "very good conditions."
At a time when Europe is turning its gaze to Africa to free itself from its dependence on Russian gas, the Morocco - Nigeria gas pipeline project is emerging as one of the alternatives to its supply. A call for European financing was recently launched by Nigerian President Muhammadu Buhari.
But where exactly does the project stand? Speaking on Friday, during a roundtable on this gas pipeline project, as part of the 33rd extraordinary session of the Crans Montana Forum Africa, Amina Benkhadra provided details on the level of progress of the pipeline.
ONYHM and NNPC are working in "total synergy," she assured, emphasizing the steps taken by the project since its launch. "The feasibility study was completed in 2018 and we decided to move on to the main FEED (Front-End Engineering design) study in two stages: The pre-FEED and the main FEED.
The Pre-FEED was completed in 2019 and it allowed to ensure the major elements of the project’s profitability, and since May 2021 we have been on the detailed engineering study, which allows to prepare all the files and all the technical, managerial, financial, legal and commercial aspects to go to the final investment decision," she detailed.
"The study is progressing under very good conditions and we hope to be on time for this highly strategic and very important project for the economic and social integration of our continent," said the Director General of ONHYM. "As an integrating project, this mega-project is likely to be supported by financial institutions and stakeholders, multilateral and bilateral," she concluded.
