Morocco-Nigeria: Éric Chelle's "bluff poker" before the clash

On the eve of the Morocco-Nigeria semi-final, the Super Eagles coach, Éric Chelle, engaged in a session of "bluff poker" during his press conference on Tuesday, January 13 in Rabat. Between humor and tactical provocation, the coach outlined what could be the trap set for the Atlas Lions.

When asked about the approach to the match, Éric Chelle made his intentions clear: "We are going to implement an anti-Moroccan national team plan." While he acknowledged that Brahim Diaz is a "very good player" and that the Kingdom has a "very good team," the Nigerian coach immediately refocused the discussion on his own troops. His priority remains physical recovery after the shock against Algeria: "What interests me is mine [my team], to know if we have recovered well. If that’s the case, I’ll project myself."

Tactics: the option of a low block?

The coach also mentioned the possibility of modifying his usual approach, citing the fatigue related to the trips between Fez and Rabat. In a mix of realism and tactical irony, he suggested that Nigeria could let Morocco take the initiative: "We might let Morocco have the ball and wait for them. We’ve seen that it was difficult for them against a team that played a low block."

Éric Chelle emphasized the strength of the Nigerian group, which he describes as a "family." According to him, the integration of his star strikers, including Victor Osimhen and Ademola Lookman, depends primarily on the balance found by the midfield and defense. When asked about the preparation of a possible penalty shootout - an exercise that evokes bad memories for Nigerians - Éric Chelle preferred to deflect with derision: "In that case, I’ll also go to the mosque to say my prayers."
