Morocco’s National Team Hit by Club Restrictions as Key Players Barred from AFCON Qualifiers

Achraf Hakimi and Sofyan Amrabat will not be present at the gathering of the Atlas Lions to prepare the last two matches counting for the qualifications of the 2022 CAN. They join the long list of Moroccan internationals blocked by their clubs.
Inter Milan and Fiorentina cite the spread of the coronavirus to justify their choice to prevent Achraf Hakimi and Sofyan Amrabat from joining Morocco. Vahid Halilhodzic’s men will gather at the end of the month, for the matches against Mauritania and Burundi.
The national team will have to face these two teams without Hakim Ziyech, Romain Saiss, Achraf Hakimi and Sofyane Amrabat. Bad news for the coach who seems very irritated by the situation, especially since he will soon have to submit his list of called-up players.
The Royal Moroccan Football Federation (FRMF) is still trying to convince the clubs to release the players, even if the probability of succeeding is very low. In addition to the players mentioned above, other internationals risk being absent due to injuries. These are Noussair Mazraoui, Nassim Boujellab and Yassine Bounou.
