Morocco’s National Team Coach Hervé Renard Steps Down After CAN Disappointment

Hervé Renard is no longer the coach of the Moroccan national football team. "It is time for me to close this long and beautiful chapter of my life, not without a certain emotion and sadness, but it is an inevitable decision taken well before the 2019 CAN," he wrote on his Twitter account on Sunday, July 21, 2019. The French technician, who will have spent 41 months at the head of the Moroccan national team, also wanted to express his thanks to the royal family.
Morocco’s early elimination on July 5, in the round of 16, by Benin on penalties, during the 2019 Africa Cup of Nations (CAN), was the big mistake, for a team that had been runners-up in the CAN in 2004 and quarter-finalists in 2017.
"Yes, we all hoped for better for the 2019 edition of the CAN in Egypt, but football is like that, it gives rise to the wildest hopes and brings us harshly back to the reality of a too rapid elimination on penalties," regrets Hervé Renard, who specified that Fouzi Lekjaâ, the President of the Royal Moroccan Football Federation, was aware of his resignation and "has contractually committed" to respect it.
The technician nevertheless wanted to send a message of thanks to King Mohammed VI and the entire royal family. "I would like to express my warmest thanks to His Majesty King Mohammed VI. May God assist him, for all the efforts made to develop sport and football in particular! I take this opportunity to thank Prince Moulay Hassan as well as the entire Royal Family," said Renard, who wanted to express his gratitude to the royal family.
