Morocco Military Arsenal: South Korea US Defense Modernization Strategy
The Royal Armed Forces (FAR) are accelerating the modernization of their short-range arsenal. Facing a multiplication of low-altitude aerial threats, the Kingdom is diversifying its suppliers and now relies heavily on South Korean and American technologies.
In 2025, Rabat integrated 101 Chiron air-to-ground missiles and 50 portable launchers from South Korea into its defenses. This infrared and ultraviolet guidance system allows interception of helicopters and tactical drones up to four kilometers altitude, within a radius of seven kilometers. According to data communicated by Seoul to the United Nations and relayed by specialized media Infodefensa, this volume corresponds to authorized transfers for the year, without guaranteeing the complete physical delivery during this period.

The American government is also participating in this tactical reinforcement. In May 2025, Washington validated the potential sale of 600 FIM-92K Stinger Block I missiles to Morocco, an operation valued at 825 million dollars. Recent conflicts in Ukraine, the Middle East and the Caucasus have proven the effectiveness of these portable systems (Manpads) for immediately neutralizing loitering munitions without deploying heavy infrastructure.
Historically linked to Western equipment, the Moroccan army is undertaking an assumed strategic shift towards Asian industry. Industrial sources place the Kingdom among Seoul’s priority markets in North Africa. The Moroccan general staff is also closely observing other South Korean weapons, such as K2 Black Panther main battle tanks, K9 self-propelled artillery and the Cheongung medium-range air defense system.

Beyond imports, military partnership between the two countries is taking on a direct industrial dimension. Several South Korean companies are currently studying possibilities for establishing operations on Moroccan territory. Their objectives focus on local manufacturing of military equipment, maintenance of defense equipment and technology transfer, confirming Morocco’s place as one of Africa’s primary recipients of Seoul’s weaponry.
