Morocco's Melon Exports to EU Surge 10%, Ranking 4th Among Suppliers

Morocco ranks 4th among melon exporting countries to the European Union in 2020, according to data from the Euroestacom statistical service (Icex-Eurostat).

Morocco exported 49,970 tons to the various EU member states in 2020 for a total value of 59.81 million euros, an increase of 10% compared to 2019, according to Icex-Eurostat. With this exported quantity, the kingdom ranks 4th among melon exporting countries to the EU. Moroccan melons are sold at an average price of 1.20 euros per kilo, 46.34% more expensive than those grown in Spain. In total, 851,040 tons of melons worth 738.03 million euros and an average price of 0.87 €/kg were purchased by the European Union last year.

In the top 5, Spain is included. The leading supplier to the EU, the country exported 318,730 tons of melons in 2020, a decrease of more than 11.25% compared to 2019 (359,130 tons). With a volume of 164,860 tons exported (2,260 tons more than in 2019) for a value of 64.86 million euros, Brazil ranks second. The Netherlands ranks third with 108,160 tons for a value of 107.1 million euros, down 11,580 tons from last year. With 35,040 tons exported for 29.2 million euros, Costa Rica closes the podium.
