Morocco Makes Women’s World Cup Debut Against Powerhouse Germany

Ranked in Group H, the Lionesses of the Atlas, who are participating in their first women’s World Cup, make their debut on Monday, July 24, with a serious opponent: Germany, the 2nd best nation in the history of the competition. Will they measure up like the Moroccan men’s team, the flag bearer of Africa, whose historic run ended in the semi-finals of the 2022 FIFA World Cup against France (2-0)?
"They will do as well as the men," is convinced Rabab Tougha, 14, after a training session at the football school of the local club in the Casablanca neighborhood of Avadas, whose ambition is to practice this sport internationally, especially after the exploits of the Lionesses of the Atlas. They have made Morocco the first Arab country to participate in the women’s World Cup. The competition is taking place in Australia and New Zealand.

Moroccan football fans have high hopes for the Moroccan players and they are aware of the challenges ahead. "Moroccan supporters have this passion, just like us the players, and we will give everything to satisfy them," the captain of the women’s football team, Ghizlane Chebbak, told FIFA.com. "The men have shown us that nothing is impossible if you fight for it and stay focused," she added.
Monday, July 24, 2023 will mark the debut of the Lionesses of the Atlas, who will face Germany, the 2nd best nation in the history of the competition (two titles in 2003 and 2007, a second place in 1995 and fourth place in 1991 and 2015) and finalist of Euro 2022. Then they will cross swords with South Korea and Colombia, who are participating in the Women’s World Cup for the 4th and 3rd time respectively, in an attempt to get out of the group stage. These four teams make up Group H.
