Morocco Leads Maghreb in Champagne Imports, Ranks 5th in Africa

Morocco is at the top of the list of champagne importing countries in the Maghreb. This is revealed by the 2019 report of the Comité Interprofessionnel des Vins de Champagne (CIVC).
In total, 3.7 million bottles of champagne were imported into Africa in 2019 for a value of around 90 million euros. With 1.1 million bottles imported, South Africa occupies the first place in the ranking. The country far outpaces Nigeria (2nd, with 569,440 bottles), followed by Côte d’Ivoire (348,955 bottles), the DRC (220,352 bottles), Morocco (212,410 bottles), Cameroon (170,297 bottles), Togo (59,702 bottles), Congo (148,774 bottles), Gabon (147,426 bottles), Mauritius (111,340 bottles) and Benin (83,599 bottles).
In the Maghreb, Morocco (212,410 bottles) is the leading importer of champagne ahead of Algeria (24,000 bottles) and Tunisia (22,000 bottles) and Egypt (12,000 bottles). Egypt and Ethiopia with over 100 million inhabitants are low importers of champagne.
Globally, the United Kingdom retains its first place in the CIVC ranking with 27.3 million bottles, or 17.3% of the total export volume. It is followed by the United States (25.7 million), Germany (11.6 million), Japan (14.3 million), Belgium (9.2 million), Italy (8.3 million), Australia (7.7 million), Switzerland (5.4 million), Spain (4.3 million) and the Netherlands (2.5 million). The United Arab Emirates (10 million inhabitants) which ranks 13th in the world is the first Muslim country on the list, with one million bottles.
