Morocco Leads Arab World in Renewable Energy Production, Study Finds

Morocco has claimed the top spot in the ranking of Arab countries that are ahead in the production of electricity from renewable energies. It is followed by Egypt and Jordan.
According to an economic study recently published by the "King Abdullah Center for Petroleum Studies and Research (CAPSARC)" in Saudi Arabia, the renewable energy sector requires more workers per megawatt of energy produced from renewable sources, unlike the energy sector based on fossil fuels. The study revealed that this type of energy represents about 1% of total employment in Morocco, Egypt and Jordan.
It also specified that these figures are in line with recent estimates by the International Energy Agency (IEA), according to which renewable energies are capable of employing more than 40 million people by 2050. In terms of employment, this agency indicates that the energy sector will generally create 100 million jobs by 2050.
Furthermore, the CAPSARC study pointed out that the increase in the workforce requires the availability of competitive, interactive and motivating markets to attract local talent. It also added that this issue was an opportunity for governments to diversify the energy mix and reduce youth unemployment.
However, the study regretted the lack of interest shown by future students in scientific, technical and engineering disciplines, which form the backbone of this sector.
