Morocco Lawmakers Push for Stricter Social Media Content Regulation

The proliferation of immoral, futile and offensive content on social networks is a concern for civil society and political actors, especially opposition deputies. They are calling for decisive action to combat this negative phenomenon, which affects the social and cultural fabric of society. Mohamed Mehdi Bensaid, Minister of Youth, Culture and Communication, proposes solutions.
This content is harmful to the whole of society, especially for young people and children who can be exposed to it without supervision, said the opposition deputies on Monday during the oral question session at the House of Representatives. They call on the government to play a key role in the fight against this phenomenon by strengthening surveillance and strictly enforcing laws to ensure a safe and comfortable internet environment.

The responsibility to fight futility and offensive content on social networks is a "societal responsibility," responded Mohamed Mehdi Bensaid, adding that citizens have the right to go to court to deal with this phenomenon. According to the minister’s explanations, the Moroccan Penal Code punishes all acts related to the dissemination of any offensive content or inciting sexual violence, as well as other legally prohibited acts.
Bensaid also said that his department is working to disseminate various topics and initiatives aimed at promoting positive content. According to him, the promotion of constructive and positive content on social networks can be one of the effective means to address this phenomenon and ensure a safer and more beneficial digital environment for all.
