Morocco Launches National Plan to Combat Rising Obesity Rates, Partnering with French Experts

For better management of obesity, which remains a real public health problem in Morocco, a national plan for the prevention and fight against overweight and obesity 2019-2021 has been put in place. It relies on the teams of the University Hospital of Lille, whose reputation in this field is established, for greater effectiveness.

The statistics concerning Morocco are worrying in terms of obesity. Indeed, 10.3 million Moroccan adults, including 63% women, are in a situation of obesity or pre-obesity. Hence the importance of this national plan for the prevention and fight against overweight and obesity 2019-2021.

This plan gives a predominant place to obesity surgery, which has established itself as the "reference treatment not only to obtain lasting weight loss but also to achieve a significant reduction in cardiovascular risk factors and mortality," reports Infomédiaire.

To carry out this health policy, the Alliance of Hospitals of Morocco has decided to cooperate with the teams of the University Hospital of Lille, who have also developed real expertise in this field. Indeed, points out the same media, "they perform 500 such interventions each year and have been recognized as one of the 5 Integrated Obesity Centers in France".

This cooperation between the two entities will allow for real improvement, "in particular, concerning obesity surgery care and continuing education, by improving the knowledge of practitioners in the university hospitals of the Kingdom of Morocco". But also and above all, "research with the strengthening of a dedicated axis on diabetes and metabolic diseases," details the same source.
