Morocco Launches Massive Seawater Desalination Project in Agadir

King Mohammed VI launched, on Thursday, the work of building the irrigation network, from the seawater desalination plant in Agadir.
The commissioning of the desalination unit is scheduled for March 2021. This unit has a progress rate of 65%. According to 2m.ma, it will initially produce 275,000 m³/day at a rate of 150,000 m³/day of drinking water and a flow rate of 125,000 m³/day of irrigation water.
Ultimately, by 2030, these facilities will allow reaching a total capacity of 400,000 m³/day, which should be shared equally between agriculture and drinking water. The realization of this station is in line with the objectives of the national program for the supply of drinking water and irrigation.
Launched in January by the Sovereign, this station, located 40 km south of Agadir, aims to diversify the sources of drinking water supply and guarantee water security. It will above all make up for the insufficiency of conventional water resources. Moreover, it will also help preserve the water table, which has an annual deficit estimated at 90 million m³.
