Morocco Launches Massive Rehousing Project for 30,000 Families in Salé Slums

30,000 families identified by the local authorities of Salé and living in precarious and unhealthy housing will be rehoused through a resettlement project led by the prefecture of Salé and other partners.
This resettlement and rehousing project is one of the largest in Morocco. It involves the demolition of hundreds of houses classified as unhealthy and planted on agricultural land in Oulad El Yachi, which covers an area of 1,700 hectares. A vast slum that has been built over the years, a few kilometers from Rabat-Salé airport, reports Le360.
Not only does this pose a real urban planning problem, but also a security problem. The authorities have stressed the fact that "aircraft of all types land and take off at only ten meters altitude from this populated area".
But for others, it is difficult to leave "even an unhealthy dwelling after having spent many years there". Meanwhile, some residents are still waiting to be resettled. The authorities have invited them to be patient.
