Morocco Lags in Social Protection as Global Coverage Reaches 46.9%, ILO Report Finds

The new global report of the International Labor Organization (ILO) on social protection 2020-2022 indicates that nearly 4.1 billion people in the world have no protection, or just over half of the world’s population. What about the situation in Morocco?
According to the document, only 46.9% of the world’s population benefits from at least one social protection benefit, compared to 53.1%, or nearly 4.1 billion people who do not benefit from it at all, reports Aujourd’hui Le Maroc, specifying that the ILO table indicates that only 20.5% of the Moroccan population benefits from at least one social protection benefit. Only 13.4% of Moroccan children are covered by social protection benefits, and the coverage rate is only 6.8% for people with severe disabilities, 23.4% for the elderly, 39% for workers in the event of a work accident and 17.2% for the active population covered by the pension scheme (active contributors).
"As for public spending on social protection systems, Morocco devotes 4.5% of its GDP to them (excluding health), compared to 7.7% in North Africa, 3.8% in Africa and 12.9% in the world. For public spending on health, Morocco spends 2.1% of GDP, compared to 2.4% in North Africa, 2% in Africa and 5.8% in the world."
"It is important to note in this regard that the coverage rate in North Africa is 33.8% and 17.4% for the African continent. In North Africa, 3 countries are ahead of Morocco, namely Tunisia with a coverage rate of 50.2%, followed by Libya (46.2%) and Egypt (34.7%). The ILO was unable to access data from Algeria. As for Sudan, only 9.3% of the population is covered by at least one social protection benefit," concludes the media.
