Morocco’s King Mohammed VI Congratulates Egypt’s Al-Sissi on Re-election

King Mohammed VI addressed a message of congratulations to Abdel Fattah Al-Sissi, on the occasion of his re-election as President of the Arab Republic of Egypt for a third term.
In this message, the Moroccan Sovereign expresses to Al-Sissi his warm congratulations for the renewed trust placed in him by the brotherly Egyptian people, wishing him every success in continuing his efforts to lead it towards further progress and prosperity.
The King of Morocco says he is very proud of the distinguished ties of brotherhood and friendship uniting the two countries, reaffirming his determination to continue to work in concert with the Egyptian President to strengthen them and promote bilateral cooperation in various fields for the supreme interests of the two brotherly peoples.
An unsurprising re-election
Abdel Fattah Al-Sissi, the Egyptian president in office since 2013, was re-elected for a third term in the presidential elections, winning 89.6% of the vote. This victory, announced on December 18 by the electoral authority, did not come as a surprise. Al-Sissi, who took power after overthrowing Mohamed Morsi, is thus continuing his governance for a new six-year term. The election recorded a historic turnout of 66.8% among the 67 million Egyptian voters, with more than 39 million votes in favor of Mr. Sissi.
The context of these elections was particularly tense. From December 10 to 12, 67 million Egyptians were called to the polls in a climate marked by the conflict between Israel and Hamas in the Gaza Strip, bordering Egypt. In addition, the country was going through the worst economic crisis in its history.
