Morocco’s King Mohammed VI and Israel’s Netanyahu Hold First Call Since Diplomatic Renewal

Two weeks after the restoration of diplomatic relations between Morocco and Israel, King Mohammed VI spoke with Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, according to a statement from the Royal Cabinet.
During this conversation, the Moroccan sovereign "recalled the strong and special ties between the Jewish community of Moroccan origin and the Moroccan monarchy", highlighting "the consistent, constant and unchanged position of the Kingdom of Morocco on the Palestinian issue as well as the pioneering role of the Kingdom in promoting peace and stability in the Middle East".
King Mohammed VI also welcomed the "reactivation of cooperation mechanisms between the Kingdom of Morocco and the State of Israel, and the resumption of regular contacts, within the framework of peaceful and friendly diplomatic relations".
For his part, the Israeli Prime Minister, Benjamin Netanyahu, "assured the King of his determination to implement all the commitments made, according to a precise implementation schedule", the statement continues.
Israel is home to a large Jewish community of Moroccan origin, estimated today at around 700,000 people, while about 3,000 Jews still reside in Morocco, mainly in Casablanca, Fez, Rabat or Marrakech.
