Morocco-Israel Ties Shift Regional Power Balance, Alarming Algeria

Between the restoration of Israeli-Moroccan relations and the American recognition of the Moroccanness of the Sahara, Algeria seems stunned by two decisions it considers a threat to its stability. Abdelaziz Djerad, the Algerian Prime Minister, describes these two events as "foreign destabilization maneuvers" that could upset the balance of power in the MENA region.
Morocco can only rejoice in the diplomatic leap it has made, which allows it to open up to new opportunities and new horizons. Pierre Razoux, research director at the FMES institute, the Mediterranean Foundation for Strategic Studies and author of "Tsahal: a new history of the Israeli army", evokes the frustrations that these two events can generate.
In an interview with RFI, he stressed that even if this normalization with Israel allows Morocco to be even closer to the United States, to benefit from a certain form of technical and military assistance, or even in terms of arms deliveries from Israel, it will "further strain their relationship with Algeria, and perhaps push the Algerian, military authorities to get closer to Iran." He specifies that "all the rivalries and conflicts in the Middle East in the sense of the Arabian Peninsula-Persian Gulf and Levant are finally being exported towards the Mediterranean."
