Morocco-Israel Ties Deepen as Diplomat Highlights Shared Jewish Heritage

The new dynamic of relations between Morocco and Israel should in no way be described as normalization, according to Omar Hilale. The Permanent Representative of Morocco to the UN discusses the role of Judaism in the history of Morocco, as well as the natural coexistence between Moroccan Muslims and Jews.

The Moroccan diplomat recalled that "today, the vast majority of Moroccan Jews live in Israel, where they constitute the second largest Jewish community, with a population of about one million," specifying that a third of the members of the Israeli government are of Moroccan origin.

These Moroccan Jews are active in the fields of television, theater, literature, song, poetry and cinema. And to recall this saying of the late Hassan II: "when a Jew (Moroccan) emigrates, Morocco loses a citizen, but it gains an ambassador".

The reopening of diplomatic liaison offices paves the way for opportunities in the fields of commerce, finance, information technology, civil aviation, tourism, water and agriculture, food security, energy, sports and many other areas. For Hilale, "this exceptional history of cohabitation thus shows how Moroccan Muslims and Jews enjoyed natural peace, a harmonious coexistence that is historically rooted in the Moroccan collective DNA and identity".

The preamble to the 2011 Moroccan Constitution recognizes the role of Judaism in the history of the Kingdom and attests that the Hebrew component is part of the tributaries of the national identity, he recalled, citing the various initiatives and measures initiated by the King for the preservation of the Jewish heritage and identity of Morocco, such as the rehabilitation of Jewish cemeteries, neighborhoods and synagogues in Morocco, or the inauguration of "Bayt Dakira" and the reform of the educational curriculum to include the teaching of Jewish culture and history of Morocco.
