Morocco Invests $600 Million in Waste Sorting for 2030 World Cup Host Cities

Morocco will mobilize nearly 6 billion dirhams for the implementation of the waste sorting project in the six cities that will host the 2030 World Cup matches, which it is co-organizing with Spain and Portugal.

"As part of the preparation for the organization of the 2030 World Cup, a set of projects has been proposed, including those that will concern the six cities that will host the World Cup matches, where selective waste sorting will be implemented, which will require around 6 billion dirhams over the next two years," announced on Tuesday Leila Benali, the Minister of Energy Transition and Sustainable Development, in her response to an oral question in the House of Councillors.

The minister specified that her department will invest 277 million dirhams in the rehabilitation of the 13 waste sorting and recovery centers, 6 of which have already been completed. "There were shortcomings in the old program that we have tried to overcome by signing 6 partnership agreements with the private sector to structure the waste recovery system related to used batteries and also to oils, and now we are working on launching offers for the recovery of plastic waste with the Ministry of Commerce and Industry," she indicated.

Benali also stated that "as part of the waste reduction and recovery strategy, a national program has been developed to establish the legal basis, and a number of projects have been launched, the first being the work on the draft law on waste management and disposal."

And to add: "We have also worked on the gradual transition to a selective waste collection system, the development of the waste recovery sector and the establishment of the principle of extended producer responsibility, and we have amended law 28.00 by inserting a new article that states the principle of restorative justice." The draft law is published on the government general secretariat portal, which is waiting to "receive citizens’ observations on this subject."
