Morocco Invests 340 Billion Dirhams in Infrastructure Ahead of Major Sporting Events

Morocco is accelerating the transformation of its infrastructure in preparation for the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations and the 2030 World Cup. Significant investments are being mobilized to support ongoing and upcoming large-scale projects.
The Ministry of Equipment, Transport and Logistics has increased its investment budget for 2025 to 70 billion dirhams, representing a 9% increase compared to 2024. This budget will allow for the realization of numerous structural projects planned for this year. In total, 340 billion dirhams will be mobilized to accelerate the kingdom’s transformation, in anticipation of the CAN Morocco 2025 and the 2030 World Cup, according to L’Économiste.
Four key sectors will benefit from these investments: public facilities (29.59 billion dirhams), road infrastructure (24.35 billion), water (12 billion), and the port and maritime sector (4.22 billion). A line of 3.23 billion dirhams is planned for studies and project monitoring, it is specified. Regarding the water sector, 17 desalination plants with an annual production capacity of 320.3 million cubic meters of water will be operational by 2025, and 13 more by 2030.
In terms of road infrastructure, 1,075 kilometers of roads will be rehabilitated by 2025, including 260 kilometers affected by the Al Haouz earthquake and areas damaged by the September 2024 floods. A project of 1,000 km of expressways, costing 12 billion dirhams, should be completed by 2030, notes the publication. The port sector is not left behind. The Nador West Med port, which will be operational in the coming months, is expected to generate nearly 90,000 jobs by 2040.
As for the Dakhla Atlantic port, currently under construction, it aims to be a strategic hub for exchanges with West Africa, writes L’Economiste, recalling other port projects such as the extension of the Jebha port and the second phase of the Safi port, which is expected to be completed by the end of 2025. In the public facilities sector, projects such as the new Ibn Sina hospital in Rabat, the grand stadium in Tangier, the new terminal at Rabat-Salé airport, as well as the grand Hassan II stadium in Casablanca, are underway.
