Morocco Investigates Major COVID-19 Outbreak at Safi Fish Factory

A Covid-19 outbreak has been detected in a fish canning factory in Safi. The regional brigade of the judicial police of Marrakech has opened an investigation to find the causes and identify the perpetrators.
The outbreak appeared in early July at the Unimer fish cannery in Safi, reports the daily Al Massae. The regional brigade of the judicial police of Marrakech, as part of its investigation conducted under the supervision of the competent public prosecutor’s office, has already taken the deposition of the health technician of the cannery. Other officials of this factory will also be heard.
The investigation aims to identify the causes of the outbreak and determine the responsibilities regarding compliance with the health measures imposed by the authorities to preserve the health of the workers.
In total, more than 534 positive cases have been recorded, creating psychosis throughout the city. Faced with the situation, the local authorities were forced to prohibit access to and from Safi and to quarantine the neighborhoods with the highest infection rates such as Kleiâ, Zaouia and Kaouki.
It had also been decided to immediately close the canning units located in the city, to stop the transportation of employees, to close commercial offices at 6 p.m. and cafes at 8 p.m., and to prohibit access to the city’s beach.
