Morocco to Introduce Tax on Home-Based Tourism Accommodations

The Moroccan government is working to regulate alternative accommodations. A new tax for accommodation with locals will soon be introduced. A way for it to regulate home-based tourism.
Regulating alternative accommodations. This is one of the decisions recorded in the 2023-2026 tourism roadmap. During her appearance on May 3 in the "Confidences de presse" program on 2M, Fatim-Zahra Ammor, Minister of Tourism, said that work is being done in this direction. "The decree will be published soon. Morocco will not be the first country to regulate home-based tourism. Tourism in Croatia has made a huge qualitative leap when its government decided to regulate this activity," she said, noting that out of a total of 30 million nights recorded, Moroccans only make 8 million nights in classified hotel establishments, the rest (22 million nights) going to alternative accommodations or home-based.
"It seems normal to me to pay taxes when you generate income. Moreover, it will represent additional revenue for local authorities. I think it will be more of a virtuous circle when everything is regulated. It is also a security for both the landlord and the tenant," added the minister.

For their part, several municipalities are already working on a revision of local taxation, with a view to introducing a tax on "stays with locals". Complying with the instructions of the governor of the Mdiq-Findeq prefecture, the municipality of Martil should include the new tax on the agenda of its next regular session in May.
