Morocco's Interior Ministry Prepares for Major Reshuffle Amid Regionalization Push

An imminent reshuffle is announced at the Ministry of the Interior, with the retirement of many walis and governors and new appointments.

New appointments or changes in positions should take place after the implementation of the new organizational structure of the Ministry of the Interior to accompany the changes dictated by the implementation of advanced regionalization. Thus, Abdelouafi Laftit’s department now includes, among other things, the General Secretariat, the General Directorate of Internal Affairs, the General Inspectorate of Territorial Administration, the General Directorate of Local Authorities, the General Directorate of Civil Protection, the Directorate of International Cooperation, the Directorate of Communication, the Directorate of Information Systems, the Directorate of Rural Affairs, reports Assabah.

A "clean sweep" will be made in the coming days. Most of the walis and governors will be retired. These are those who have been in their position for more than nine years. Also affected by this measure are certain walis and governors whose fragile health shows their inability to fulfill their duties and those whose term has been extended three times. Other walis and governors will be assigned to the central services of the ministry or redeployed in other wilayas, provinces and prefectures. New profiles will then be appointed, most of whom have never been civil servants of the Ministry of the Interior. Their CVs are currently being scrutinized, according to the Arabic daily quoted by Le360. The ministry could also promote the secretaries general of the provinces and prefectures, some of whom are already serving as acting governors.

This vast movement in sight would represent a real opportunity for former ministers to return to business, at the head of wilayas in the most important regions.
