Morocco’s Interest Wanes in Italian FREMM Frigates for Navy Modernization

Morocco seems to be losing interest in the FREMM multi-mission frigates produced by the Italian maritime company Fincantieri, which it wanted to buy since 2021.
In 2021, Morocco had decided to buy two Italian FREMM frigates with exceptional anti-submarine warfare capabilities as part of the "OMEGA" program it has set up. A project aimed at modernizing and equipping the Royal Navy with new warships, including those specialized in anti-submarine warfare, to defend its two maritime facades in the Mediterranean and the Atlantic. It had therefore engaged in discussions with the Italian maritime company Fincantieri. Nearly two years later, nothing more.
According to Fincantieri, the potential contract between Morocco and Italy for the acquisition of FREMM multi-mission frigates for one billion dollars has never been signed, reports Maghreb-Intelligence. Everything suggests that Rabat would no longer consider acquiring these frigates.
