Morocco Imposes Vaccine Pass, Sparking Protests in Rabat

Several dozen people demonstrated in Rabat against the government’s decision to impose the vaccine pass without notice, preventing unvaccinated people from accessing public and private administrations as well as public spaces such as restaurants and leisure centers.

In some videos circulated on social media, we see the protesters chanting slogans against the decision taken by the government to make the vaccine pass mandatory. The demonstration was supervised by the security forces who reportedly made some arrests, reports EFE.

The imposition of the vaccine pass concerns public and private establishments, schools, restaurants, hotels, gyms and other private spaces, as well as travel between cities. The sudden nature of the measure, announced overnight, has provoked the anger of Moroccans who have flocked in droves to vaccination centers.

This first demonstration against the new government of Aziz Akhannouch comes on the eve of the first appearance of the Minister of Health, Khalid Ait Taleb, before the House of Representatives to answer deputies’ questions about the health situation and the assessment of the vaccination campaign.

To date, more than 21 million Moroccans are already fully vaccinated. Morocco is now recording lower infection rates and less than a dozen deaths every 24 hours. The administration of a third vaccine dose for all citizens has just been launched.
