Morocco Imposes 27% Import Duty on Turkish Textiles, Raising Clothing Prices

Morocco has just strengthened its commercial system regarding Turkish textiles. Since Wednesday, January 1, the government has authorized the establishment of a definitive additional import duty of 27%.
Since yesterday, clothes of Turkish origin cost more in Morocco. And for good reason. The kingdom has strengthened its protective measures against Turkish textile imports, reports L’Économiste. Regarding Turkish clothing, the media specifies that the Kingdom is now applying an additional ad valorem duty of 90% of the customs tariff that was applied to them under the common law, until December 31, 2021. However, the provisional additional duty was 22.5%, i.e. 90% of the import duty rate of 25%.
As of January 1, 2020, Morocco, in its new measures against Turkish textiles, applies an import duty of 27% instead of 0%, the rate provided for in the FTA with Turkey. But also, the kingdom has raised the import duties, bringing them to 30% on all products, as provided for in the finance law, the same source reports.
While promising to update the list of products affected by these new measures, the authorities point out that textile-clothing exports from Turkey have steadily increased to reach 9.5 billion dirhams today. All the more reasons that justify the remarkable development of the commercial network of Turkish clothing brands in the kingdom, observes the same media.
