Morocco to Import LNG via Spain During Ramadan, Boosting Energy Security

Morocco is preparing to import liquefied natural gas (LNG) via the Maghreb-Europe gas pipeline (GME) during the month of Ramadan. Last March, the kingdom and Spain had concluded an agreement in this regard.
The import of liquefied natural gas (LNG) by Morocco is starting during the month of Ramadan, reports Aujourd’hui le Maroc in an article titled "Countdown for the import of liquefied natural gas". "Spain has responded favorably to Morocco’s request for support to guarantee its energy security. Thus, Morocco will be able, in full transparency, to acquire liquefied natural gas (LNG) on international markets, transform it in a regasification plant in Spain and transport it to its territory via the Maghreb pipeline," Leila Benali, Moroccan Minister of Energy Transition, had declared in early February. The Maghreb-Europe gas pipeline crossing Morocco, whose contract the Algeria has refused to renew, which expired on October 31, will thus be reactivated.
LNG will allow Morocco, which has adopted a Low Carbon strategy, to reduce its CO2 emissions. The kingdom has big ambitions for the natural gas sector. It plans to equip itself, in the coming years, with specific infrastructures, in particular methane terminals to receive and store gas imports. In the same dynamic, the Ministry of Industry and Trade and the Department of Energy Transition and Sustainable Development as well as the National Office of Hydrocarbons and Mines (ONHYM) have developed a project for industrialists. Projects that look promising.
